Why choose a outfitter when travelling with your family?

A stay at an outfitter in Lanaudière is an immersion in a preserved natural environment where both kids and adults find their joy. Here are a few reasons why these places are a true family paradise:

Discover nature up close: Loons, eagles, wild rabbits… here, wildlife observation becomes a real adventure game for children. It’s the perfect opportunity to truly disconnect and enjoy an enchanting setting. We were lucky enough to witness an impressive scene: two eagles attacking an osprey, along with spotting countless loons. At Auberge de la Barrière, kids can even feed free-roaming rabbits and visit an alpaca pen — a huge plus for families!

Introduce kids to fishing: Gently, with lessons and well-stocked lakes. We learned how to set up a line, tie a hook, cast a rod, and try different fishing techniques. Very instructive for both kids and adults! You feel supported and guided, no matter your level of experience.

Enjoy family-friendly facilities: Some outfitters, like the one we visited — Auberge de la Barrière — offer everything to keep kids entertained: inflatable games, playgrounds, boats, private beaches, and hiking trails.

Savor local products either in the lodges or around a campfire with s’mores and grilled sausages. We opted for a local beer from Trécarré Brewery — even better by the lakeside!

Less stress, more fun: What’s great about outfitters is that they take away a lot of the planning stress. You know the cabins will be adapted, and people are there to help. At the one we stayed at, it was even possible to eat at the restaurant and enjoy a drink. The view from the terrace was simply breathtaking. And when you pay for lodging, fishing is included — great for your wallet and fewer headaches for you!

In other words, it’s the perfect place to live a family outdoor experience with no compromise between relaxation and fun.

How to organize your trip with your kids?

Choosing the Right Outfitter

Each outfitter in Lanaudière has its own personality: some focus more on sport fishing, others on family activities. Before booking, make sure to check the services offered: fully equipped cabins, dining options, beaches, playgrounds, and equipment rentals.

Adapt to Your Children’s Age

  • With young kids: choose an outfitter with a beach and play areas to keep activities varied.

  • With teens: go for those that offer water sports (canoe, paddle board) and more technical fishing.

Pack the Essentials

Even though a lot of gear is provided on-site, don’t forget to bring:

  • weather-appropriate clothing,

  • swimsuits,

  • games or books for the evenings,

  • and most importantly… a marshmallow kit for campfires!

Balance Activities and Rest

The key to a successful family stay in an outfitter is balance: mix active moments (fishing, swimming, hiking) with calmer ones (relaxing on the terrace, wildlife observation, reading).

Our Outfitter Experience: An Inspiring Glimpse

For our experience, we wanted to combine comfort and a change of scenery, which is why we chose Auberge de la Barrière. From the moment we arrived, we were amazed: the shimmering lake, the cabins along the shore, and the surrounding wildlife made us feel like we had stepped into another world.

Highlights: the kids loved feeding the free-roaming rabbits, sliding down the water slide, and jumping on the floating trampoline. We also enjoyed fishing right in front of our lodge and tried different watercraft, including paddle boards and kayaks. Three lakes were accessible to mix things up and try to catch five different kinds of trout! Being less experienced, we chose to stay on the lake just in front of our cabin, but it was wonderful to have so many options.

We also took part in an introductory fishing class, where our guide passionately taught us the basics. And what a proud moment when Charlie caught his very first trout — a beautiful golden one!

In the evening, a delicious local meal at the inn followed by a campfire under the stars completed this extraordinary experience.
