Winter doesn’t necessarily mean boredom and freezing cold to avoid at all costs. On the contrary, it's the perfect time to step out of your comfort zone, try new activities, and be enchanted by Québec’s snowy landscapes.

This weekend, we explored the breathtaking Chaudière-Appalaches region, where we discovered a wide range of winter activities: dog sledding, ice fishing, snowmobiling, and even an unforgettable encounter with wolves.

If you're looking for a ready-to-go itinerary for an unforgettable winter getaway with your family, here’s my complete guide to experiencing a magical weekend in the heart of Québec’s wilderness.

Day 1: Immersion at Pourvoirie Daaquam

A Cozy Cabin in the Heart of Nature

Our cabin awaited us with all the necessary amenities: a fully equipped kitchen, two bathrooms, a comforting fireplace, and even a television (which we never turned on, of course—we were there to enjoy the great outdoors!).

In the morning, the view of the Daaquam River was absolutely breathtaking. The first light of day illuminated the fresh snow, promising a day filled with adventure and discovery.

We had opted for the full-board package, which included meals at the lodge, but it’s also possible to bring your own food and cook in the comfort of your cabin.

A Warm Welcome at the Lodge

To start the day right, we headed to the lodge for breakfast. There, we were greeted by Caretouche, the owner’s friendly dog, and had the pleasure of meeting Max, the owner himself, who personally came to shake our hands.

The atmosphere was welcoming and family-friendly, with a crackling fireplace, board games, and a cozy setting that immediately won over the kids.

Afternoon: Thrills on a Snowmobile

After a short rest at the cabin, we put on our snowmobile helmets and received a quick training session before heading out for an adventure.

Guided by Max, we explored the snowy trails and the famous American border lines, where he shared fascinating stories about the history of this natural boundary.

No worries—the experience is 100% safe:

  • Helmets provided
  • Private trail
  • Speed adapted for families

We returned at sunset, our eyes filled with the beauty of the wild landscape.

Evening Relaxation at the Lodge

While Nicolas dozed off on Dad’s lap, Charlie made friends with a French family, and Alaska drew pictures, we enjoyed a local beer from Microbrasserie de Bellechasse.

A great meal, a few conversations with fellow travelers, and off to bed, ready for another day of adventure!

Day 2: Unique Dog Sledding Experience

Nothing like a dog sledding morning to start the day off right!

The guides explained the basics of driving before letting us set off on our adventure. Guillaume and the older kids had their own team, while I shared a sled with my daughter and an experienced guide.

We traveled through the woods, a frozen river, and a snow-covered bog. Seeing the dogs eager and excited to pull the sled was an unforgettable experience.

After the ride, we got to pet the dogs and learn more about how the kennel operates.

Final stop: The LUPO Wolf Sanctuary

Address: 139 Rang Saint-Jean, Sainte-Apolline-de-Patton, QC G0R 2P0

Website: https://www.sanctuairelupo.ca/

Opened on December 26, 2023, the LUPO Sanctuary is a magical place dedicated to the protection of wolves.

Nestled in the heart of nature, the sanctuary offers an immersive guided tour where visitors can observe these majestic animals up close.

During our visit, we encountered three female wolves and one male wolf, who often parade near the windows to observe visitors.

The site also offers:

✔️ Hiking trails
✔️ An amphitheater with a breathtaking view of Mont Sugar Loaf
✔️ Camping accommodations to sleep near the wolves (summer only – yes, it’s possible!)

It was both an educational and fascinating experience, perfect for all ages.
